Karen Arms Biology Scholarship

Arms is best known for her publications “Environmental Science” and “Biology”, which have been instrumental in educating students and fostering a deeper understanding of ecological systems. Her dedication to education and her passion for the natural world have inspired countless individuals to explore the intersections of science and art. This scholarship will support an artist for a one week residency whose work uses biology as a springboard for research and discourse in their imagery.

Thom Smith Abstract Scholarship

The Thom Smith Scholarship honors a Vietnam veteran, SCAD trained painter, and harmonica playing product of the ’60s whose abstract work used bold color and form to mark life’s turning points. Rooted in a love of Southern blues and improvisation, his practice embraced rhythm, memory, joy, and storytelling. This scholarship will support a one week residency for an abstract artist whose work engages movement, emotion, and history through color and form.
